Oxford Tour Guide

Looking for private Oxford walking tours led by a local, experienced Oxford University graduate?

I offer a carefully structured 1.5-hour private tour of Oxford University, designed for visitors who want depth, clarity, and authentic insight rather than a standard group experience.

Why This Tour?

My name is Iain, I’m a graduate of Jesus College which means that I’m an Oxford tour guide with authentic knowledge and experience of life as a student here at the University.

You’ll enjoy my unique insights and stories about this enchanting “city of dreaming spires”.

A private 1.5-hour introduction to Oxford University

Oxford makes most sense when it is explained from within — by someone who has lived it, studied it, and guided others through it for years.

I was at school here, St Edward’s in Summertown, and then went on to read Modern Languages at Jesus.

Having grown up locally, returning a decade ago, and now living in the historic centre, I guide not as an observer, but as a local shaped by the city and the University itself.

For the past nine years I have guided professionally and am a member of the Oxford Guild of Tour Guides, licensed to lead groups within participating Colleges and the Divinity School.

Over the years I have entertained visitors from around the world, developing a tour that responds thoughtfully to the interests of each group.

Real visitors frequently mention:

How quickly the tour helped them understand the University as a living community not just a list of buildings.

It made Oxford feel possible — especially for young people already thinking about higher education.

This is one coherent experience, not a collection of themed segments.

What the Tour Covers

Oxford Tour Guide Iain Radcliffe Camera From Exeter College Fellows Garden

During our walk we explore the very heart of the old medieval city… its most famous, iconic and interesting locations.

There is no fixed script.

The structure is clear, but the direction is guided by your questions and interests.

We will certainly cover:

How Oxford University is organised and how the Colleges function.

College life, customs and long-standing traditions.

The Bodleian Library complex and the Divinity School.

The tutorial system and collegiate structure.

Literary and cultural associations woven naturally into the wider University story.

Where possible, we visit Jesus College — my own college — offering a personal        perspective on student life past and present.

Experience & Clients

Oxford Tour Guide Iain in the Divintiy School

Over the past nine years I have guided families, academic visitors, conference delegates and international cultural travellers.

I work regularly with established travel providers, including Viking Cruises and Audley, whose guests value thoughtful, destination-focused experiences and depth of context.

I also guide prospective students and their families who wish to gain a clearer sense of Oxford as an academic environment — how college life functions, how teaching is organised, what to expect.

Having read Modern Languages here, I am particularly comfortable guiding international visitors and adapting the tour to different backgrounds and interests.

A Note on Film Locations

Oxford has served as a filming location for the Harry Potter series and other productions.

These sites are included where appropriate within the broader University context.

Visitors seeking a dedicated film-location experience are invited to explore my specialist tour.
